What is Mahjong Royal?

It is a single-player puzzle built on the standard mahjong solitaire rules. Tiles are arranged in a layered pile, and you remove them by matching pairs that look the same. A tile can only be matched when it is free, meaning it has an open edge on its left or right side. As you peel tiles off the top, tiles underneath open up. The goal is to clear the whole board, or to find all the special tiles a level asks for, before you run out of moves.

Controls and matching

Everything runs off a single click. Use the left mouse button to select one tile, then click its match to remove the pair. On a touchscreen you tap instead.

When is a tile free?

A tile is playable only when at least one side, left or right, is open and nothing is stacked on top of it. Tiles boxed in on both sides are locked until you clear the ones around them. Reading which tiles are free, and which match you should make first, is most of the puzzle.

Special tiles and what they do

A few tile types break the plain matching rule, and knowing them changes which pairs you go for.

TileBehavior
Season tilesMatch each other even when the pictures are different
Flower tilesAlso match each other regardless of the picture
Reversed tilesFace down, then turn around when you select them
Scissor tilesMatch a pair to free trapped tiles on the board
Rock tilesDo nothing and cannot be matched or removed

Awards, medals and unlocking levels

Speed is rewarded. The faster you clear a board, the better the award and medal you earn for that level, and those medals open up new levels to play. You can replay a board to chase a cleaner, quicker run if your first clear was slow.

Is Mahjong Royal free and unblocked?

Yes. The game is free and loads straight in the browser, so it works at school or work wherever browser games are allowed. There is no download, install, or sign-up. It also runs on phones, tablets and Chromebooks, not just desktop.

Tips for clearing the board

What makes it work

The matching itself is easy, but the order you do it in decides whether you finish. Pull tiles in the wrong sequence and you strand a pair with no open edge, which forces a restart. That small planning step is what keeps a simple click-to-match board from getting dull.
