Mahjong Connect (Legacy)
More games to play
Mahjong Connect is a free browser puzzle game where you clear a board of tiles by pairing identical ones that share an open path. No download or account needed, and it runs right here in the browser, so it works at school or at work wherever browser games are allowed. Released in May 2009 by Front Network, this Flash-era classic holds up well. The path rule keeps things honest: a line connecting two matching tiles can turn corners but cannot pass through other tiles, which means every move changes what is possible next.
What is Mahjong Connect?
Mahjong Connect is a connect-style tile-matching puzzle game. Unlike traditional mahjong solitaire (where you lift pairs off a stack), here all tiles sit flat on a grid and you match them by tracing a clear route between them. The route can bend up to twice, but it must stay unblocked. Clear every pair and you advance to the next level. It is a single-player game with no time pressure on most levels, so the challenge is planning which pairs to remove first to avoid locking yourself out.
Controls
One button does everything. Click any tile to select it, then click its matching pair. If a valid path exists, both tiles disappear. Click a selected tile again to deselect it.
| Action | Control |
|---|---|
| Select a tile | Left mouse click |
| Deselect a tile | Click the selected tile again |
| Match a pair | Click the first tile, then click the identical second tile |
How the path rule works
The path between two matching tiles must meet three conditions: it can only use horizontal and vertical lines, it can turn at most twice (two 90-degree corners), and it cannot pass through any tile still on the board. This is what gives Mahjong Connect its depth. Removing one pair can open a path that was previously blocked for another pair, so the order you pick matters as much as spotting the matches.
| Path condition | What it means |
|---|---|
| Same tile symbol | Both tiles must show the same image or character |
| No obstacles | The connecting line cannot cross any other tile |
| Max two turns | The path bends at most twice before reaching the target tile |
Level progression
Each level presents a new board layout with a different arrangement of tiles. Early levels use smaller grids so patterns are easier to spot. Later levels pack more tiles into the space and use layouts where only a few pairs have a valid path at any given moment. Clearing tiles is the only way to open new routes, so the game naturally ramps up without changing any core rules.
Tips for avoiding a dead end
- Start with pairs on the edges of the board. Edge tiles have fewer neighbors blocking their paths, so they are usually easier to match early.
- Look for isolated tiles first. A tile surrounded on three sides has almost no path options and will become unmatchable if you do not clear its neighbors soon.
- Think two moves ahead. Before clicking, check whether removing a pair will open or close routes for the tiles you plan to match next.
- If you get stuck, scan for pairs along the same row or column with nothing between them. Straight-line matches (no turns needed) are always valid.
